Panes of Glass

I recently finished reading Tempered Steel by Steve Farrar. It is a phenomenal book that follows the life of David and shows how God uses time in the pit to grow and develop us into people who are more like his Son Jesus. It is not a torture to find yourself in a pit, but rather a blessing. Only by finding yourself in the pit do you know that God loves you and is not letting you live your life on your own.

 The pit, according to Farrar, can be anything from a "pop quiz" to a complete stranding on a deserted island, a la Robinson Crusoe. Spending time in these "interruptions" grows our character and teaches us those things that are necessary for the next stage of our development as members in the body of Christ.

If you have ever been in a pit yourself, you know exactly the pain and distress that these "pop quizzes" can throw at you. Perhaps you are still there or know someone who is. If so, it can be helpful to talk with a counselor. Talking with a counselor does not mean that something is wrong with you. You could schedule an appointment just to talk through some financial matters or a strained relationship with a friend, loved one, or significant other. I have done this myself, and it can provide a sense of relief and release from the weights you think you are carrying around. (Praise God for being our willing load bearer through the work of his Son on the cross!)

If you don’t feel up for a session with a counselor, contact your local church and ask about the Stephen Ministry. This a growing ministry that provides a believer to walk with you through a difficult trial. All interaction is completely confidential, but they are not counselors, only people to lean on.
