The Future of Web Applications

I’ve been thinking about web applications and where they are heading over the past few months. I’ve become a big proponent of progressive enhancement in the last year since finally leaving behind the basics of PHP to learn more about JavaScript, CSS, XForms, Ruby on Rails and ASP.NET. Since then I’ve been learning more about semantic HTML, the separation of concerns and how they help web site optimization, and the role of technologies like Adobe’s Flash/Flex and Microsoft’s Silverlight. CSS Naked Day

Today is CSS Naked Day, and panes of glass has, yet again, gone naked. This time it will only be for the day. I would love to say that tomorrow you’ll be seeing the new, dazzling design of PanesOfGlass.org, but alas! you will not. I do have my images now; I just won’t really have the time to finish until after the beginning of May. For those more interested in CSS Naked Day, I recommend the Lorelle’s post.

Panes of Glass Goes Naked!

Don’t get your hopes up. This is only temporary until I finish the redesign. In the spirit of CSS Naked Day, I’m going naked while I redesign my page. My wife Julie Riley of J. Riley Creative helped me redesign my site the way I’ve always wanted to do it, and now I’m going to put it in place. This is going to require some time, as I’m not just using CSS, but I’m also re-working the default behaviors of WordPress to print out material the way I like it. You’ll see what I mean soon…. :)

The New Look

What do you think of the new Panes of Glass? For the longest time, I’ve been wanting to do this, and I finally found some time this weekend, when I was able to finally sit upright for any amount of time. For the longest time, I have neglected the actual look and design and focused on writing my own software. I realized in Dublin that while writing software is really cool and interesting to me, it’s not my end goal. My end goal is to write, and as you can tell, I have not been doing much of that since I have spent what little time was left me on trying to learn programming languages and writing software that is still incomplete.
